RE: corrosion and soft spots underneath traillite bantam

Update: checked underneath and discovered four likely holes in the aluminum undercover where water could get in and cause delamination under the entrance-way floor. Looks like a dealership job.

RE: corrosion and soft spots underneath traillite bantam

I replaced part of the flooring in our 1998 B17 a couple of years ago (spilled liquid got under the vinyl floor covering), but it is mushy again right in front of the door and about a foot short of the bathroom door. I know I did a good job so the problem now must be underneath. I discovered during the repairs that the left support of the steps is screwed to a piece of 2x4 but the 2x4 isn't anchored to anything so when you put any weight on the step, it pushes up on the floor! I didn't know how to fix that and was going to get someone to weld the step support to the frame but never did. We've been using a stool as a step instead. I'm going to have the dealership look at it to determine if I can do the repairs myself.

RE: Considering Small Hybrid-Advice

We have been towing a Trail-Lite B17 Bantam (bought in 1998) with a 1995 4.0L V6 Ford Explorer. The trailer is on its second axle (lousy roads in the Yukon, B.C. and Saskatchewan beat the******out of the first one) and the XLT is on its second transmission. Towing did in the first one. We have been to the west and east coasts several times and while uphill grades were slow, we never had a problem. The trailer now has over 35,000 miles on it and the XLT 175,000+ miles. We've had one flat on the XLT, none on the B17; no blow-outs either. No leaks with the canvas but I had to replace part of the floor when I forgot to remove a container of liquid one fall and it froze and burst then defrosted in the spring. Up front, the fibreglass popped out of the retaining strip at the bottom edge and I fixed it. We're off down east again next month and hoping to get up to the Arctic Circle next summer.

RE: Quebec traffic light question

Most people know Montreal as a city. Someone should explain the Montreal Island part, yes?

RE: Bring a knife to Canada?

We're big on helmets up here (not by choice). However, if you're helmeted and have 3-4 packs of darts with you to ward of ravagers, you should be good to go. j_m

RE: Service Work in Ontario

There was absolutely no problem in dealing with them, although he did clearly state up front that he would give preference to his customers first, which I think is fair. I just made sure to book the appointment early enough in the season for that not to be a problem. When I phoned our dealer yesterday to make an appointment for some maintenance work, the first question I was asked was had I bought my trailer from them. Hmmm, like ten years ago and you've serviced it nearly every year since. No problem. I figured the spring rush was over but they have so much work, it made no difference waiting till later so yes, they're refusing walk-ins in order to be able to look after their own customers. Took it in today and it will be ready next week. j_m

RE: Sask HWY 35

Does anyone know the condition of Sask highway 35 south from Weyburn to the US border? We will be going south at the end of July and want to make sure we are taking a route that isn't full of pot holes and gravel sections. Thanks for any input! http://roadinfo.telenium.ca/sk/map/map02.html Thar y'go! Just put the pointer on the highway and check the readout on the right side. j_m

Your Ministry of Transportation puts out road reports on its web site; road repairs, etc. I have used this on previous trips but be aware that the Ministry tends to be a little optimistic about the condition of its highways! j_m

RE: REALLY NEW TO CAMPING

Be sure to look at TrailManor and HiLo's for the two high-end hybrids. I personally don't like anything with canvas ends for several reasons but they are about the cheapest way to get started in RVing as compared to camping (in a tent). TrailManors and HiLos are NOT hybrids; they are nowhere close to being a combo of a regular TT and a pop-up with canvas bed ends. They are, however, another option. j_m International Hybrid Camper Association most of the time that Dick B. posts on the Hybrid forum is to suggest someone buy a Trailmanor or HiLo, instead of a hybrid. methinks he might sell them.;) And if he doesn't have a hybrid trailer, what's he doing on this forum???? j_m

RE: REALLY NEW TO CAMPING

If you don't have any shade, I would not camp in a hybrid. The tent ends are hard to cool if in direct sunlight. It can also be drafty in the winter. this is not true. many hybrid owners camp in hot/sunny conditions and are fine. many camp in cold conditions and are fine. you have use things like solar blankets or popup gizmos or reflectix. they are a lot less drafty than a popup. and you have the option to "turtle" and be like a regular TT, if the weather is bad. Dead-on. We have camped in really hot weather without an AC and survived :) As well, some springs and falls have been cold, wet, windy and just plain miserable, but the furnace handled it. Hardier folks have done some winter camping (turtled up) in Algonquin Provincial Park where outfitters set you up for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or dog-sledding, Yukon/Alaska style. j_m

RE: REALLY NEW TO CAMPING

Given your primary destination (racetracks), I'd go with a regular travel trailer. You'll be thankful for the solid walls which will not only block out noise but help keep inside temperatures pretty even if you have an air conditioner for the summers. We've camped for 10 years in a hybrid which is great for national, provincial/state parks dry camping and boondocking, but I wouldn't want to camp in one at races of any kind. j_m

RE: Cranbrook BC Walmart/area for quick overnight?

Overnighted there last Oct. before Thanksgiving. It was fine except for the late start the next day because of the 2 hours DW spent shopping in the mall:) There is a large Superstore for groceries so it is quite convenient. That's called a trade-off. :) j_m

RE: Cranbrook BC Walmart/area for quick overnight?

We visited our son in Cranbrook last year and being campers ourselves, took note of the TTs stacking up in W-M parking lot in the evening. Unless they've put up a sign effective this camping season, I'd say it's do-able. Otherwise, there are two campgrounds called Fort Steele only minutes north of town. One is just across the bridge and the other is opposite Fort Steele itself. j_m

RE: Need Help on Identifying Axles

Good luck! When we had to have the AL-KO axle replaced on our Trail-Lite B17, only part of the ID tag was visible. Our dealer contacted AL-KO who did not have the axle # for specific makes or models on file. Twice, axles were sent by AL-KO to the dealer and were the wrong ones. Talk about trial-and-error in the computer age!!! Finally, another B17 owner took his trailer in for servicing and our dealer managed to get the missing info off his axle tag. The third axle came and was fitted on without any problems. If possible, switch to a Dexter axle which A) is tougher and B) has a 5-yr warranty compared to AL-KO's 2 yr. warranty. j_m

RE: Annual Comanche Invasion of Canada

Hmmmm, there's not much to acquire over here that's problem-free. A decommissioned General Motors plant in 2009, ageing nuclear power plants, farms optioned to land banks and developers, mining takes precedence over land claims and that's just Ontario. In Quebec, the official language is French only (how close is that to Commanche?), unzoned development trumps everything, the Quebec gov't has already "worked over" the James Bay Cree twice, the snowshoe and moccasin business has tanked. Even getting through to the Maritimes you'll find nothing but trouble re: logging and fishing rights. Things have been downright crabby the last few years. Last I heard, whole nations were voting to head west and the new economy (taking over Commanche territory and businesses under the guise of being new immigrants and integrating into the melting pot) and generally snapping up all the best camping spots while waiting for things to develop. j_m

RE: I Hate the Provincial Park Money Envelope

Plan Ahead Planning ahead is no good if you don't know what the method of payment is going to be. I think the writer's rant is a legitimate one. He's not the only one who's had that problem and it's not limited to his home province either. I froth at the mouth when the easy/only solution is to "donate" another dollar when both the feds and provincials are cutting parks budgets and maintenance. A pox on addle-minded bureacrats. j_m

RE: Kodiak/Aerolite Auto-pop dome ends

Look around, pick a design that you like, and then don’t worry about it. Relax and enjoy your htt. Keep everything as simple as possible. You'll have fewer - if any - problems. j_m
